Trupanion Pet Insurance Overview

Trupanion Pet Insurance Carrier Overview:

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. We’re here to provide everything you need to know regarding Trupanion pet insurance so you can make an informed decision as you determine how to select a pet insurance policy.

About Trupanion:

Trupanion Pet Insurance started in 2000, based out of Seattle, with policies underwritten by American Pet Insurance Co. This insurer offers customized plans for dog insurance and cat insurance with unlimited lifetime coverage and the unique ability to pay your veterinary clinic directly at check-out, so customers have only their portion to cover up front.

What Does It Cost?

This company’s monthly costs vary depending on your pet’s breed, gender, cost of pet care in your local area, the deductible you’ve chosen, and your pet’s age at enrollment. The rate at which your pet enrolls is locked into your premium cost. Premiums do not increase as pets age and are not dependent on the number of claims filed.

Services and Incidents Covered?

Accidents, Illnesses, injuries, hereditary chronic, and congenital conditions, as well as hip dysplasia, are all covered. Trupanion pet insurance offers a Recovery and Complementary Care Rider, which covers alternative therapies such as acupuncture, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, and behavior modification.

Are There Any Coverage Exclusions?

There is no coverage for preexisting conditions. Also, they do not cover well pet exams, examination fees, sales tax, or elective/cosmetic care.

How Much Coverage do they offer?

After your deductible is met, Trupanion pet insurance covers 90% of your invoice for new illnesses and injuries. Some unique facets of this particular company are that they do not put customary limits on the invoice items paid. Claims can be paid directly to your pet’s clinic, which also means you don’t have to cover the entire cost up front, waiting for reimbursement. You pay only your portion at check out.

What are the Payout Limits?

Trupanion offers unlimited lifetime coverage, with no payout limits or Caps. This is true for both dog insurance and cat insurance.

What Would My Deductible Be?

Your deductible is flexible and can range from $0 to $10,000. Raising or lowering deductibles can be done at any time. They offer a lifetime, per condition deductible. Once you meet your deductible for a specific condition, the policy will pay out 90% for any related issues for the lifetime of your pet.

Do They Have Age Restrictions?

Pets may enroll after 8 weeks of age. There is no “age out” policy for senior dogs with dog insurance, but they must be under 14 years of age at enrollment. As pets age, your coverage will not change, nor will your premiums increase.

Is There a Waiting Period After I sign a policy?

Accidents that happen 5 days after a policy is signed will be covered, whereas illnesses require 30 days before coverage. There is no additional waiting period for hip dysplasia or any other condition that is commonly seen with dog insurance.

What Do the Reviews Say?

Trupanion pet insurance received accreditation from the Better Business Bureau in 2002. This company has received 74 complaints, but currently holds an A Rating.
